Sleep 7 Hours Keep Brains Stay Sharp
May 9th, 2011 | By wownesia | Category: HealthDo not underestimate the time sleeping at night. Based on studies from scientists at University College London, for 7 hours of sleep habits can help maintain the sharpness of the brain in old age.
Even so, it does not mean you can sleep your heart’s content. Because the time sleeping too long can increase brain age up to seven years. The same result was also felt if you have time to sleep too short.
The team leader researcher Dr Jane Ferrie explains this decline in brain function as well as growing old four to four years.
“The length of time to sleep normally decreases as you age, so does the brain cognitive function. So we wanted to see whether there is any connection between this sleep pattern changes,” said Ferrie told the Telegraph on Monday (09/05/2011).
In experiments performed Ferrie and his team, found that adults with sleep less than six hours in the past five years has decreased scores on tests of logic and vocabulary. They also found that individuals who sleep more than 8 hours a day showed a signal decrease in cognitive function.
Ferrie and his team found that women who slept seven hours a day had the highest scores on cognitive tests, as men with sleep 6 to 8 hours.
“We were surprised to find people with longer sleep duration appeared to have lower scores for cognitive function, except in the case of memories,” he continued.
“We think this has to do with sleep fragmentation. That is, even if a person sleeps long enough, not necessarily their sleep ‘quality’. We calculate the change of sleep makes the brain cognitive function is reduced, the same as someone who is aged four to seven years, ”said Ferrie again.
Researchers used data from surveys of public health-related long-term, which is known as the Whitehall II study and is completed by approximately 5431 participants aged 35 to 55 years. They were asked to complete the six cognitive tests including tests of logic, vocabulary, fluency in spoken and remembrance.

Hi I am so delighted I found your site, I really found you by error, while I was searching on Google for something else, Regardless I am here now and would just like to say cheers for a fantastic post and a all round thrilling blog (I also love the theme/design), I don’t have time to read through it all at the minute but I have saved it and also added your RSS feeds, so when I have time I will be back to read more, Please do keep up the superb job.
Sleep is so important for the brain, not just something for someone who feels they get enough. Whether you realize it or not, your thinking skills the next day will be affected by the amount of rest you got the night before. Even if you do not realize it because you are in a robotic like work pattern and are use to doing the same thing everyday. Funny they say you are not paid to think, so you only need so much sleep just enough to be active. That is very unhealthy and will affect brain health over time.
Sorry but I have to agree with the comment that you don’t rlealy know what TRUE brain fog is. I have Lyme Disease and I can tell you that all your little suggestions have no impact on TRUE brain fog. Of course eating better will help to some degree but will not eradicate TRUE brain fog. The condition you speak of is a rather vague way of describing a feeling that most people get on occasion and is transient. TRUE brain fog is 24/7, 365 and feels like your brain is on novocane.
